About

... Personally, I still can’t tell what I love more about photography: to outline the reality I observe or to narrate my own visual story. What I know is that I love photography for it’s perfect balance between a real story and a perception ...

...It all started in the ‘70s. Late ‘70s, of course, because I'm not so old... I was going to Venice on a family trip and my father gave me his old Voigtländer with a rangefinder. A 12 shot film... black and white, that goes without saying... The day was grey and rainy, but, nonetheless, something sparked in me, violently...

... during the 80s, university times, to earn some cash I entered a photography studio... I owe a lot to my tutor Alessio... moreover, it was here I discovered the inspiring music of “Pavlov’s Dogs”.

... there goes the 90’s, my “red light” period (the camera oscura that is). Incredibly intense decade, blended by the unmissable acquaintance with Gabriele Basilico...

... a new millennium, and it’s time to face a challenging passage from the camera oscura to digital photography. Among others, my guiding light here was Roland Barthes and his “Camera Lucida”. Thus, my lasting visual experience together with my research on the semiotics of the image constituted my digital vision. Now this book has a place of honour on my bookshelves…

Today I am a professional photographer; I work for different publishers, for various private and public institutions, as well as individual clients. I shoot and write for National Geographic Italia (click here to check my articles) and for such specialized historical journals as Archeologia Viva, Archeo, Medioevo. You can meet my photos in plenty of art catalogues as well.

Among my recent exhibitions, I’m particularly fond of the exhibition “Piranesi prima e dopo” dedicated to modern interpretations of Piranesi works (Pushkin Museum, Moscow, Russia) and the international showcase “Eternal Road” with my archaeological shots exposed (Sremska Mitroviza, Serbia).

You can order my photographs directly by following this link or contact me by e-mail ph@gianlucabaronchelli.com for a customized order.
